It's not easiest task to find rockabilly clothing in larger sizes in Europe, but the german webshop Rockabilly Rules is a great exception. I was thrilled to find some really nice things there, many of them in a classic 50's juvenile deliquency, hot rod style.

Everything from their own brand Rumble59 is all made in sizes small to 3X and jeans up to 36/36".
Well THAT is something we're not spoiled with in Europe! These clothes makes me wanna hang out at a diner, race fast cars and break curfew....

If you like the clean-cut vintage lifestyle, Betty Draper in "Mad Men" and light pastels, Kappahl's spring collection "Vintage Stories" is looking very promising! The keywords is 1950s, cupcakes, the female form and great details.
It's dresses, cardigans, childrens clothes, accessories and lots more. They even got aprons and cupcake forms, great idea!
"The feeling of the clothing is fresh, like they have been washed and then dried on a string in the sun".

As usual I'm quite disapointed with the sizes, nothing is larger than a size 46 (aprox. US 16) but I know the shape and the material is often quite forgiving so hopefully they will fit a wider range of body types.

My household has just been blessed with a new box set of movies made by the legendary film maker Kenneth Anger.
If you like anything retro, underground movies, hot rods or just plain kitsch, you must have a look at this wounderful short film.
It's called "Kustom Kar Kommando" (1965).
If there is anything called hot rod porn, this would be it.

It's camp, it's beautiful and very, very stylish.

I got a new fashion icon: the truly gorgeous and stunning Joan Holloway (Christina Hendricks) from the tv-show "Mad Men". It takes place in New York in the early 1960's and I love how well they have captured everything from hair to clothes and interial design.
And for Joan....well, she's got it all: a killer figure, wit and amazing style. Just take a look at her!

What I Will Try To Achieve In 2010

* Visit Rascal Kosher again

* Keep a higher maintenance, wear red lipstick as often as possible and spoil myself more

* Do everything I can to keep healthy and excersise at least a couple of times a week

* Don't let some days pass just by without having done at least a few things I really enjoy, such as read a book, watch a movie or write something

* Be helpful to others and always be very polite (this is something I already am, but I want to keep myself that way). I think everything you do to others comes back to you.

* Try to be as honest and straight to myself as possible, do the right thing

* Get out more, meet people and don't be too self-conscious

I'm so sorry for the lack of posts! I have been knocked out by a nasty case of bronchitis and almost coughed my lungs inside out...I'ts getting better every day now, but the cold temperature outside is not the best environment for my throat so I stay indoors as much as possible (which is not too terrible, considering I got unlimited access to movies and chai tea...).

I need your help!

I'm working on a very exciting article about pinups and dogs. Gil Elvgren is known for often putting a mischievous little puppy in many of his pictures, dogs often appeared in commercial pictures in the 40's and 50's and the phenomenon is continuing in modern days with projects as Pinups for Pups for example.

I would like to hear your theories why pinups and dogs goes hand in hand (paw)?

Large size swimwear is not the easiest thing to find...

I came across Plus Size Swimwear, a great source for swimwear up to a smashing size 32! Some very cute retro inspired pieces and everything is really affordable. I really like the variety, everything from seperates to one-pieces in a million different colors and patterns. They also offer special swimwear from women who's done a mastectomy (yay!) and also athletic pieces.

Another thumb up for the use of models with "real" sizes!

Yesterday I watched a little gem of all WWII movies made, Hope & Glory (1987).
Set in London during the beginning of the war, we follow 9-year old Bill and his family through air raids, rations, lindy hop, his sister falling in love with a canadian soldier and so much more. If you get a chance to see it, please do - you won't be sorry you did.

I've found the cutest little red house that I want to set my domestic claws in!

3 rooms, kitchen and a beautiful garden with apple trees and raspberry bushes - perfect. It needs a little work, but I think that's half the point of having a house.

And it's a good reason to buy all those million nifty little things you've desired for so long... Like this "oh so necessary" leash holder....

To be honest, I'm so sick and tired of living in a block of flats. Half of the neighbours are crazy morons and the janitor is a animal-hating idiot that doesn't do his job (it hurts to pay the fee every month when he doesn't do what we pay for).

I love this part of town and we are fortune enough to have a 5 minute walk down town and 5 minute walk to the woods.

But there is too many things I don't like and I want some peace and quite and to have a garden for the dogs to run around in.

Now it's only a few obstacles that I need to take care of (like a unwilling man with absolutly no imagination at all) before I can get things moving around here.

It's been quite doldrums at MissWink's for a little while. I've been a busy little bee and also felt a little bit uninspired to write, to be honest. Everyone needs a little break once in a while so I took one - and now I'm back with fresh ideas, more eager to write than ever!

Viggo has been to another international dog show, this time in Svenstavik in the darkest of forests in Sweden....

We had a smashing success with Viggo winning Best of Breed AND his second Challenge Certificate ( basically and by swedish rules, when the dog recives 3 CC it becomes Champion) AND as icing on the cake a International Challenge Certificate! He's just 16 months old, my little boy. I might be the proudest scottie mom in the world now...and yes, I wept...

Enough of my shameless bragging now.

No phone, no stress

My cellphone died today. And guess what? I'm not upset at all. It's quite relieving not being avaliable all the time! I got a stationary phone at my house and e-mail. To be honest, that's enough for me.
I'm not too sure I will get a new cellphone, at least not immediately.
Maybe it would be healthy for all of us to learn to not be accessible every moment? We managed before....

Scottie tattoo?

My poor arm is so swollen I can't take a decent picture yet, but it will come one as soon as I don't look like I have been sleeping in a bee's nest. But the tattoo turned out great (it's a zombie pinup with roses and leafs) and we will be adding colour in about a month.

I have already thought out my next project, since I discovered an empty space on the back of my arm. It's a sort of strange V-shape. What could I possibly fit in there?
And then it struck me; a scottie of course!
A kind of cartoonish scottie, maybe from an ad or holiday card. So I went out and looked for vintage pictures and paintings of scotties and found millions. Here is a few of the ones I consider to tattoo or use as inspiration.

Dipping and bargains

Had a field day yesterday! First, a long walk and taking a swim at some cliffs early in the morning.
Then I discovered that there will be a car booth sale every Saturday the whole summer just a few steps from my door. Yay!

Find a couple of vinyls for only 10 SEK/1 Euro/$1,25 each. Three Divine ( I'm adore him and John Waters) and the soundtrack to "Some Like It Hot", all in excellent condition.

I recently stumbled upon a new little goldmine with large size retro inspired clothing and oh my, you are in for a real treat here!

Hot Couture is a small Australian brand with gorgeous dresses. They also carry suspenders, petticoats and belts.

They carry sizes from XS to 3X (thank you!) and most clothes are avaliable in several mouth-watering fabrics like polka dots in various colours, apple green check, pink cherries...I could go on forever.

Hot Couture has also chosen to use models of all shapes and sizes, something we are not spoiled with on a every-day basis.

I'm at work, but is having my lunch break and decided to write a little entry about my latest Etsy-find, a vintage sailor hat. It's the cutest thing, with a navy blue brooch with a golden star. I plan to wear it with my navy blue 1940's dress with white polka dots.

Midsummer's Eve

First of all, thank you so much for all the nice comments and e-mails I got with wishes of a speedy recovery! That's really sweet of you and I appreciate it so much!

It's Midsummer's Eve and I'm about to take a little trip out to the country side to visit my dear parents. My doggies will of course come along and they will have a field day: lots of buddies to play with and gigant lawns to run around!

Since the sun hasn't had the decency show up today, I guess we'll stay indoors or just have a little walk or two. We will have a traditional Midsummer's dinner and hopefully a cosy evening together with tea, cookies and maybe some murder mystery on TV.

I will try to pick the traditional 7 kinds of flowers to put under my pillow in hope to dream about who my future spouse is. Yes, I'm such a silly gal...

As I wrote a couple of weeks ago, I watch ALOT of spaghetti westerns at the moment. Italy was a goldmine in the 60's and 70's and I can't go on without showing you the trailer for the one I watched a few days ago: "Vamos a matar, compañeros" (1970) by Sergie Corbucci.
This must be the ultimate spaghetti western, it got it all!

A crazy swede (!) played by Franco Nero ( the manliest man who's appeard on the silver screen, I say) who travels around and sells weapon and dynamite to the highest bidder, the mexcian revolution, blowing up a bridge, gun fights, duels, beautiful women, hangings, unlikely friendships, Jack Palance as a marijuana-crazed psychopat who's got a artificial hand and a pet falk, cunning plans, hijacking a train, escapes - the list could go on forever.
And an unforgetable score by Ennio Morricone. Just listen to the song in the trailer!

Open letter to Daisy Dapper

Today I'm writing an open letter to the store Daisy Dapper. I decided to make it public for several reasons but mainly because it's very friendly and is something of a wish list.

"Dear Daisy Dapper,

ever since your store opend I've seen your stock getting bigger and better. You carry lovely hair bows, bags, swim suits, dresses and a million little tasty treats. The webstore is cute, the psysical store is beyond pretty.
You're updating your blog with new things in stock and pictures from the store that makes me wanna spend every single penny I got there.
But I got one huge issue that's bugging me: larger sizes.
The lack of size options is not ok for me. I want to be able to support DD and buy clothes there too, not just knick-knack and accessories.

I know that some of the dresses you sell are being in size 2X, the same goes for tops and skirts. There are great designers out there that make wonderful clothes in larger sizes, like Dismantled Fashions (that girl deserves a european distributor!) or Heartbreaker Fashion.

Running a store is a very hard and demanding job and I admire everyone who's brave enough to do that. You can't please everyone and it's costly to buy things to the store.
But please, Daisy Dapper - keep us curvies in mind. Don't forget about us and let us have the opportunity to love you even more!

Why make large clothes ugly?

Alright, it's about time for another rant!

I'm so sick and tired of bad design, dressmaking and tailoring. Especially when it comes to plus sizes. Why should the larger ladies settle with the second or third best? And WHY all the baggy designs with weird seams and "cute" prints (flowers, always flowers....)?

Look at this example. It says alot about the problem I talk about.

Lindex, a huge chain of fashion stores, has a lot of hawaii-inspired items at the moment. In their "normal" section (size extra small to large) they have this cute dress. High waist, fun details and nice, flattering fit. A great summer dress.

In their plus size section (sizes large to 3XL) they have this dress. It's the same fabric and is the larger version of the dress above. Yet, it's not the same dress at all. Look at the waist! Baggy, frumpy model, short sleeves with elastic band (why?!) and not low cut at all (why would a fat girl wanna show some cleavage...). It's just horrible.

Why couldn't they just make the same cute dress in larger sizes?

I feel like starting a riot...

Someone asked me the other day why it's so hard to find vintage clothes in larger sizes? I thought about it for a while and here is my humble theory.

The average woman in general wasn't very slim in the 40's and 50's. No, she had hips and curves but she also used a whole other range of undergarments that helped shaping the body. "5 pounds of underwear" as Jennifer puts it in the movie "Welcome to Pleasantville".

The clothes in smaller sizes survived beacuse there was fewer people who wore them. Middle- and larger sizes had more supply and demand and therefore they were worn out.

Of course you can find larger sizes now, but they are often expensive since the demand is so high.

I guess we're lucky to have all those replicas being made these days, right?

So, I have been watching a couple of spaghetti westerns.
Everyone who knows me is aware of my fondness of good-looking, rough-around-the-edges-men... And now I got a new favourite: the italian actor Franco Nero when he does his best part ever in "Django"(1966). He plays Django, a lonewolf and gunman who drags a coffin behind him, haunted by his past. He's fast-shooting, silent and oh so sad... a total heart throb if you ask me. That three-day stubble and blue eyes could make any woman crazy!
Just look at this little trailer. I've had the title song in my head all day.

This entry is completly non-retro related..I'm just bored and have nothing better to do.

A list of a few of my guilty pleasures:

- I wear black leggings at home because it's so comfortable.
- The 15 year old girl in me is madly in love with the vampire Edward from the movie "Twilight" (ouch! that one hurt to confess!)

My mother just got this beautiful vintage dress!

Smashing black lace and tulle 50s cocktail dress with beaded accents around the neckline. Pleated tulle at bust and inserts in gores of skirts. Black beads around neckline with crystalline drops. No flaws at all. It's so hard to find this kind of dress in larger size so this is a real gem!

So, as I told you about here my birthday is coming up soon and my family want to get me a cruiser bike. Yay!

At first I fell in love with the Electra Gigi which is a total dream with it's art deco pattern, white string basket an cute wheels.

But now I have a new love, the Electra Betty!

She's a more punk rock nightmare in black and pink with pink flames and tassles. I'ts more of a bad girl bike..and I sure love that!

It's easier to accessorize Betty since she's got no basket, horn or rear rack. It's fun to buy cool stuff to your bike and you can make it look exactly like you want it.

So, what do you think?

So I might be a year or two behind everyone but I have to write a little something about this little gem called "The Notebook", based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks.
Being the hopeless romantic I am this is right up my alley! Wonderful 40's scenery (I want every clothing item I saw), drama, the South, WW2 and love with a capital L.....
Ryan Gosling as Noah qualifies to my Top 5 list of "Men who look amazing in vintage workwear (never has a baggy peaked cap looked so good..).
Yes, I cried. Several times.
And I enjoyed every second of it!

For my fellow movie geeks I have to say that the US Region 1 edition I got has the far best extras and image quality, but any edition will do.

I'm beyond myself by excitement at the moment...
Yesterday my scottie Viggo made his debut in the show ring at Stockholm International Dog Show. And guess what?
He got his first certificate and became best male scottie and runner up for best in breed (Best of Opposite Sex), beaten by his mom who became a Champion today! My little boy, just a year old....
He got a whole bunch of nice prices and a goblet for his certificate.
I'm so proud of him!

Spring-cleaning in the closet

Today I have been busy cleaning out my closet!
That was hard work.... What to keep? Throw away? Give to charity?
In the end it turned out to be aprox. 65% keeping, 25% to charity and 10% went to the trash bin. I'm quite happy with the result since I usually have a very hard time letting go of things. I even got rid of the holy grail of fashion: shoes! THAT hurt..but in the other hand, now I have room for more lovelies.

Now I'm gonna make some necklaces while I watch a zombie movie or two.

A comment about the whole housewife thing...

Oh boy! My last entry about the housewives really made people talk... It's like I said, it's one of the most provoking subjects now.

I really dislike the fact that some people think that the idea of a housewife is some romantic vintage-girl dream. Nothing could be more wrong! How naive do you think I am?

And of course I don't want women to be dependent on men (in my book it's quite the opposite..).

It's just so frustrated that some people is unwilling to see the possiblities to make everyone happy. Why not a government grant/salary for the women who choose to stay at home? That will secure their pension.

Some readers also trew a fit about the women who stays at home won't have a resume etc.

Why wouldn't they?

What stops them from taking classes, having a smaller business and so on?

The comment about "good luck to support a family with kids on one salary" is just ridicilous. I wrote about how mad I am about the fact that a family can't be supported on one salary. Why? Because things are waaay too expensive now, people don't know how to fix and trix, the economy is blown up on credits and we pay too much for our things.

Please, people! Don't you realize that the whole world needs to slow down?

(Kikkans post about Rascal's comment being musty and heteronormative is just hilarious. I so sick and tired of people getting spastic whenever someone shows an opinion that's not cut and pasted out of Politically Correct ABC..)

Put pride back in the housewife!

I've come to realize that one of the most provoking things you can say nowadays is "I want to be a housewife".
Why is that?
So many things associated with the classic image of a housewife is like waving a red picece of cloth in front of an angry bull. For example: a couple of days ago I spoke with a woman at work about cooking. I said I always make my own meatballs instead of buying that awful ready-made stuff you can pick up at the grocery store.
"Why?" she asked me and looked like I have said something very inappropriate.
"Because they taste a millions times better, I know exactly what's in them, there is no chemical additives and I really like making the things I eat by my self. That goes for almost everything."

She gasped and said that I sounded like her grandmother (a compliment, from my point of view) and that she couldn't understand why such a young person as me was willing to waste so much time on simple things like cooking...

When I tell people I use old-fashioned soft soap to clean the house with instead of modern cleaning agents they think I'm nuts. "It can NOT get clean with just that!".
Yes, it gets very clean and smells wonderful.
I do what I have learned from my mother and what she learned from her mother.
Nothing would make me happier if I was able to be a housewife and take care of everything at home, feeling proud of my work and having dinner ready when my husband comes home from work. I would't feel less valuable or subdued as a human being or as a woman! Why would I?

Women nowadays is overworked and exhaused from the constant preassure from the culture we live in.
Have a career! Shop expensive brands! Live in a never-ending hamster wheel that goes faster and faster! Eat processed food that makes you tired and sick! Be mother of the year! Live up to people expectations!
All at once....and the gastric ulcer arrives at your doorstep.
We eat fast food, have cell phones, trying to do things as effective as possible and yet we do not have time for anything valuable.

Why can't we get back to when people KNEW how to cook good food, took pride in having knowledge in housekeeping, made do and mend and had time for their children and each other?
Why can't it be a natural thing that the whole family always have dinner together the same time everyday? And why can't a family have a good living on one salaray these days?

I don't mean to sound like a member of the Christian right-wing.. I just think that regularity don't necessarily need to be a bad thing?
Why can't we appreciate the little things in life? Having a picnic with the family, going to the movies, watching little Mickeys football-game...
Sure there were plenty of unhappy housewives on tranquilizers in the 40's and 50's but times are different now. You can have tattoos and go to punk rock concerts even if you are a mother and housekeeper!
And housewifery is not for everyone, I understand that. But why is it so taboo these days to even talk about this subject?

Maybe I'm just babble and can't really focus here, but maybe you get a little hint of what I mean.
I can assure you that this will not be the last post on the subject!

At first sight I loved it, the cut and the colours is really flattering and I imagine wearing it with a pair of black wedges with peeptoe.

One of my favourite sources for weird, wonderful cult film in Sweden is closing down.
Strange Things has been a faithful friend since 2001 and I'm not the only one who's sad to see it go.
BUT on the brighter side... ST is having a 40% off almost everyhting sale now!
I went nuts in the Mexican section and got:

Satanico pandemonium 1975 (basically about a innocent and shy nun who turns into a devil-worshipping sex maniac. Self-flagellation, hallucination, lesbian seduction and much more!)

Tívoli 1975 (colorful cult drama/comedy about a mexican nightclub and burlesque theatre in
the 1950's. Dancing roosters, mambo music, evil villains, sexy strippers - what more could you ask for?)

El Barón del terror 1962 (In 1661, Baron Vitelius stands accused of consorting with the devil. The penalty: death. Cursing his inquisitors as they burn him at the stake, the Baron’s revenge comes 300 years later, in the form of a horrifying fork-tongued incarnation of the Baron, eating the brains out of people. As bodies pile up, the police become mystified. Who is draining the skulls of local call-girls ? And, more importantly, how many flamethrowers will it take to stop him? This is a cult movie-gold!)

I'm so glad it's Friday! This week has been a sligth piece of hell; loads of things to do, meetings to attend, projects to finish... Today I also did my weekly grocery shopping, cleaned the house, did all the laundry and gave the dogs a bath. Just to clear my to-do-list completely.

Tonight I dreamt that I took my doggies and moved to a little cottage somewhere in England. I guess I have spent too many evenings watching Midsomer Murders and reading PG Wodehouse novels....

Anyway, I'm quite obsessed with England. Some of it comes from my childhood when my mother traveled to England and Ireland several times a year and alway brought home wonderful things and stories about people she had met and still are close friends with.

I also watched alot of british movies and tv series as Jeeves & Wooster and House of Elliot. I wallowed in books like the Jill books by Ruby Ferguson and everything written by Enid Blython.

Basically, I was an anglophile at an early age!

Sometimes I think would do anything to get to live in a nice little house in a picturesque little village, attending church bazaars arranged for raising money for a new chuch bell, selling cookies and jam, take the bicycle down to the farm to buy fresh eggs and milk...

I want to live around lemon curd, tea pots, green moors and fields, tweed jackets, red phone booths and sheep. I want to solve crosswords sitting by the fireplace, having my dogs around my feet in my cosy livingroom that's full of pillows, flowers and books.

I want to take long walks with the dogs, pick flowers and talk to the nice old lady down at the milk store. And of course loads of fun, gossiping and adventures with Rascal!

Yes I'm a romantic dreamer, I'm so well aware of that.

But I'm enjoying my dreams...

Tokyo

Newsflash: I'm going to Tokyo!
Yes, in October Japan's capital city will have it's fair share of Miss Wink. I'm excited beyond belief!
I got millions things I want to do there: check out the crazy rockabilly kids in Yoyogi park, go shopping for cool figurines of 60's and 70's action figures like Ultraman, Inazuman, Kamen Rider (my favourite) and Kikaida, shop even more for outrageous things, look at the view from Tokyo Tower, take a day-trip to the beautiful Mount Fuji, eat really good noodles and so much more.
I guess I won't find so much plus size clothes there, but I'm sure I'll not come home with empty suitcases....

I'm just very busy with lots of things at the moment and also has a slight feeling of discomfort about myself. Nothing to worry about, it's just a phaze of unavoidable (female)..things.

Someone asked me the other day why I write under the name Miss Wink?
Well, it's mainly for two reasons:

1. I love to flirt. Alot! Everything gets so much more fun with a innocent little wink and and a smile.
